Avoiding oversized portions, switching to fat-free or
low-fat milk and drinking water instead of sugary drinks
are some of the recommendations found in the 2010
Dietary Guidelines for Americans, released by the U.S.
Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Health and
Human Services (HHS) in January. The 7th edition places
stronger emphasis on reducing calorie consumption and
increasing physical activity, and focuses on balancing
calories with physical activity. Americans are encouraged
to consume more healthy foods, such as vegetables,
fruits, whole grains, fat-free and low-fat dairy products and seafood, and to consume
less sodium, saturated and trans fats, added sugars and refined grains. The guidelines
include 23 key recommendations for the general population and six additional
recommendations for specific population groups. To read the full Dietary Guidelines,
