ACF CHEFS PLAY KEY PART IN NEW WHITE HOUSE INITIATIVE

I am so excited to bring the message back home and start working with the schools.”
More than 60 ACF members were among
more than 600 chefs who gathered at the
White House June 4 to kick off the latest
initiative in Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move!
campaign to end childhood obesity. The
Chefs Move to Schools program, run through
the U.S. Department of Agriculture and
led by Sam Kass, White House assistant
chef and the food initiative coordinator,
ACF chefs who are committed to using
their skills and knowledge to help end
childhood obesity represented 24 states,
Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico at the
White House kickoff.

communities. Chefs will work with teachers,
parents and school nutrition professionals
and administrators to help educate students
about food and nutrition.
ACF, the National Restaurant Association
and Share Our Strength will work together
with chefs participating in a pilot launch of
the program over the summer. Volunteers
will begin working in schools in the fall, and
ACF members will be among those helping
to take the Chefs Move to Schools initiative

The 2010 U.S. Army Europe Culinary
Arts Team took home a total of 22 gold
medals, nine silver medals and five bronze
medals and the Installation of the Year
award at the 35th U.S. Army Culinary Arts
Competition, an ACF-sanctioned event that
took place at Fort Lee, Va., Feb. 27-March
12. In addition, the team won group and
individual awards, including the best cold-food exhibit in category E, best pastry live
cooking in category P and Junior Chef
of the Year award. The team received the
highest combined score in recorded history
of the competition.
